Company of Crimeis a criminal empire-builder featuring tactical turn-based missions. It takes place in 1960s London, the cultural capital of the world and home to a plethora of subcultures and businesses. Your task is to build a company that will own the criminal underworld, or if you play as the chief inspector of Scotland Yard’s famous Flying Squad, tear it down piece by piece. In the process you will go to pubs, clubs, vets, tailors, harbors and many other locations as you expand your influence over the city. Your team consists of either gang members possessing the different skills required to pull off criminal tasks, or detectives that have mastered the art of investigation. The big question is ultimately this: who will take London?Tactical turn-based melee combatWith a focus on melee combat and tight spaces, Company of Crime sets itself apart from other tactical turn-based strategy games. Units have a zone of control that makes them tied to the choices you make. Block enemy movements, build superiority in numbers, and gain flanking bonuses by attacking from behind. You can even kick enemies where the sun doesn’t shine to create safe passageways to units that would otherwise get free attacks. If someone grabs a gun, either find cover or go after them to wrestle it away before the bodies start piling up.Heat mechanicsWhen doing your dirty business, you’d be wise to silently extort your way through the underworld. Loud gunfire or shooting enemies will only attract more opposition, and a criminal empire that blows its cover won’t go far. Fighting the outcome of too much heat is always more difficult than avoiding it, and if things get too tough, you better have some leverage to get the cops off your back.Level progressionThis is more than just cops and robbers. Whatever the mission is, there is level progression beyond just hit points and stamina. Beating up the owner of a pub is one thing, but you can’t just bail before the police arrive. You’ll have to first assemble any evidence that will prove it was you at the crime scene before jetting.Building legit business with criminal meansBuilding a criminal empire requires a legitimate cover. Progression of the game takes place as you… ahem… “convince” people to sell their businesses and homes to you at a bargain price, or at least turn a blind eye to what you do in their back room. Owning more locations will unlock more items, features, and elements, but will also potentially expose you to a surprise attack from the police or a rival criminal family. Not just your own storyWhile your task is to create an empire of crime or to tear it down, this is not just your story. This is a story of 1960s London with beatniks, mods, lemonheads, rockers and every other cultural identity of the time. It’s also a story of a falling empire. The Cold War UK is shining in the cultural world, but is facing ever-increasing pressure from inside and out. There is a mysterious order trying to tear down the British Empire from the shadows, and who better to fight it than experts of the underworld and the famous Flying Squad.Reactive PoliceShady business takes place in obscurity, so police gameplay is more reactive. You get the call only when violence takes place, but that’s not the best way to find evidence against the criminal families. Assign sergeants to discover shady places, speak with informants, and apply for search warrants to raid questionable locales. Make sure they don’t burn the evidence before you manage to arrest them, or they’ll walk free as quickly as they were taken in.

The faculty of deduction is certainly contagious, Watson.” –Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Problem of Thor Bridge The gaslit streets of Victorian London. Horse-drawn broughams, hansoms, and dog-carts rattle over the cobblestone streets, pulling their passengers through the pea-soup fog. On every street corner, you pass booksellers, clubs, prisons, music halls, doctors, tea houses, and steamship companies. Yet in the shadows and dark alleys of this great city, horrible and cunning crimes are committed daily, confounding the policemen of Scotland Yard. Still, even the most ingenious crime is only a puzzle for the world’s only consulting detective—Sherlock Holmes! Ten fully revised cases for the Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective line from Space Cowboys will soon be available with the newest standalone box, The Thames Murders and Other Cases. Like the previously released Jack the Ripper & West End Adventures, The Thames Murders and Other Cases offers ten thrilling cases, each one drawing you into the mystery surrounding a deadly crime in the world of Sherlock Holmes. Whether you’re playing alone or with up to eight players, you’ll need everyone’s wits to solve the case. Important note: The ten cases in The Thames Murders and Other Cases are the same ten cases released in the Ystari version of the game Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective, now fully revised and retranslated. The solutions and contents of some cases have changed. Like previous adventures in the Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective line, every case in The Thames Murders and Other Cases draws you into a perplexing mystery on the streets of Victorian London. Each case begins the same way—with an introduction read aloud, relaying the facts of the case. From that starting point, the city of London opens up before you. Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective offers a drastic departure from every other board game—even other cooperative games. You and your friends are not confined by taking turns, one after another. You aren’t even limited in where you can go. The entire city of London is yours to investigate and explore, spread out on a physical map for you to pore over. Beginning your investigation is simply a matter of deciding where you want to go on the map. Perhaps you and your fellow investigators decide to visit the scene of the crime and search the area for clues. Every location on the map corresponds to a simple set of coordinates—by looking up those coordinates in your case book, you’ll be able to read what you find at the scene of the crime. The passages within this case book give you the chance to notice suspicious objects and read your interviews with suspects… but you won’t find your way too far without consulting some of the other resources at your disposal. Alongside your map and your case book, you have some other pertinent items, starting with your London Directory. Within this short booklet, you’ll find the addresses of countless people within London. Perhaps you learn that a certain Leticia Garcia may have been implicated in your latest case. By looking her up in the London Directory, you can find her address, allowing you to turn to her section in the case book and continue your investigation! And of course, you wouldn’t be fully equipped for your job without a detective’s most overlooked tool: the daily issue of The Times newspaper, available for you to peruse and scan for any relevant information. Even though the clues in The Times may not be plainly laid out for you, there’s still plenty of information that may prove crucial to interpreting a clue and deciding on your next step—if you can find it mixed in among articles, obituaries, and advertisements. The clues are all before you, and ten unique cases await in The Thames Murders and Other Cases. From the curious case of The Munitions Magnate, to The Pilfered Paintings, to The Mummy’s Curse, every case offers a new challenge for your deductive skills. It’s up to you and your friends to conduct your own investigations, visiting the witnesses, the suspects, and the scene of the crime in order to piece together the narrative behind each crime.

Levi Vogue, chairman of the powerful Utah Board of Pardons and Parole, is gunned down in the driveway of his home as he returns from a late evening tryst with Sue Ann Winkler, an exotic dancer at a Salt Lake City strip club. Sam Kincaid, chief of the Special Investigations Branch of the Utah Department of Corrections, is assigned to help Salt Lake City Police Department homicide detective Lieutenant Kate McConnell solve Vogue’s murder. The investigation soon leads Kincaid and McConnell into the seedy world of prostitution and strip clubs. The investigation focuses on Charles “Slick” Watts, a violent ex-convict with a long criminal history and a score to settle with Vogue. Then a body is discovered at an abandoned military base in Wendover, Nevada, and the medical examiner concludes that it was a homicide elaborately staged to look like a suicide. Kincaid and McConnell are forced to turn their attention to a complex conspiracy behind the killings. Ultimately, the investigation leads Kincaid and McConnell to a small elite group known as the Commission. As the police close in, the suspects turn first on each other and then on Kincaid. About the author: Michael Norman is a former police officer, state parole board member, and professor of criminal justice. His novel The Commission was one of Publishers Weekly’s Best Books of 2007. 1. Language: English. Narrator: William Dufris.
